Workshop – Controversial Topics 2: The Dilemmas of Student-Initiated Controversial Topics

Description: What happens when the students are the ones to introduce a controversial topic in our classrooms? This interactive workshop focuses on the discussion and analysis of a case study that highlights the dilemmas faced by an 8th grade teacher who, on the one hand, wants to support student voice and choice–and, on the other hand, needs to do that in a way that respects and supports the diverse needs and perspectives of the other students in the class. By the end of the workshop, you will have a deeper understanding of the various dimensions of the dilemmas presented when students introduce controversial topics in your classroom; the opportunity to think through your own responses to those dilemmas, and a tool (the case study) that you can use in discussion with colleagues (or students) to support learning conversations about how to respond effectively in the face of similar dilemmas.
